Past

This section describes my development as a designer and how I worked towards my FBP, through different squads, to discover my interests in design and develop the necessary skills to be able to make The Exploratory Loom.

From Idea To Design, Project 1 - Smart Cities

From Idea To Design, IPACT!

Project 1, AEOLUS

In my projects in the first year I learned different aspects of the design process such as iterative processes, prototyping, peer review and presenting skills (C&A, T&R). In my first group projects we developed a boardgame towards environmental impact and AEOLUS, a wind turbine advertisement system. During this first year I also learned how to process and analyze data through the courses Data Analytics and Making Sense of Sensors.

Project 2 - New Futures

Project 2, Tutoreal

Project 2, setup emersive tutorial

Project 2, demoday setup

In Project 2 I, together with my team, developed Tutoreal, a device that guides users through the repair of electronic devices with audio and visual cues. During this project I learned the importance of user interaction and repair (U&S, T&R). I used skills gained through design for interaction as a starting point for Aesthetics of Interaction that I would follow the semester after (C&A).

Project 3 - Transforming Practices

Project 3, FixGrid

Project 3, TP carousel

During Project 3 FixGrid, an interactive demonstrator that addresses the gap between the informal repair knowledge and formal design education, was designed (U&S). In previous bigger projects I let others do the programming but for this project I took matters in my own hands to be able to develop my coding skills. During this project I learned to use digital data communication between OOCSI, ESP-32 and Arduino Mega to make a code that ensures a smooth interaction for the user of the demonstrator (M/D&C, T&R).

Internship

Internship, play with form, color and size

Internship, play with color combinations

Internship, workspace during internship

Internship, final lamp design

I wanted to do an internship at an interior design studio to learn how they operate and approach different design processes. At Scheublin&Lindeman, where I did my internship, I got to spend months working on a lamp design. I did this through iterations and decision making in form, material and color combinations (C&A). During this internship I truly developed my making skills with industrial machinery such as sawing tables, planing machines and industrial sewing machines (T&R).

Design Courses

Design for Debate, workshop outcome

Aesthetics of Interaction, Mindpalace

Exploratory Making, mechanism exploration

Design courses that were influential for the development of me as a designer were Design for Debate where I learned other design approaches such as more then human design (U&S), Aesthetics of Interaction where I dove deeper into meaningful interactions and how you can support these within a design (C&A) and Exploratory Making which I found difficult because of my goal oriented mind-set but this new design approach intrigued me and supported my development as a designer throughout my FBP (C&A).

Business Courses

Design Management, business model canvas

Entrepreneurship in Action, analysis of business model portfolio

During my Bachelor I took many business courses to learn about business design, IP rights and how you could bring a product to the market successfully. Courses I followed include: Introduction to Business design, Design Management, Intellectual Property Rights for new Ventures, the Technology Entrepreneurship USE-track and I will follow Design Innovation Methods in the following semester. My efforts in this expertise area earned me a Bachelors Certificate in Technology Entrepreneurship. With my knowledge in business and entrepreneurship I am able to design business models and determine the right innovative track for a variety of design projects (B&E).

Extracurricular Activities

Show our demonstrator at Repair Cafe XL event

Next to my education at Industrial Design I also participated in extracurricular activities. After Project 3 was finished our group was invited to present our demonstrator at the Repair Café XL event in Den Haag.

Het Beun Collectief, 2024

Het Beun Collectief, inside the design studio

I was part of starting ‘Het Beun Collectief’ where I was a member for over a year. I had an amazing time here where I had the opportunity to network with the various design studios around us, present at the DDW and collaborate and learn from each other’s skills (C&A, T&R, B&E). After being a part of this studio I learned my desired way of working, which is mostly focused around textiles/soft materials.

Committee Beun, working on project for svid Lucid

Committee Introductie Week, preparations introduction week

I also joined multiple committees from Lucid, such as ‘Beun’, ‘FOCUS’ and the ‘Introduction Week’ committee, where I learned to plan events and skills such as woodworking and photography (C&A, T&R).
